Extremal Solutions of Differential Inclusions via Baire Category: a Dual Approach

Let F be a continuous multifunction on IR with compact convex values. For any vector w, let F(x) ⊆ F (x) be the subset of points which maximize the inner product with w. Call W the set of all continuous functions w : [0, T ] 7→ IR with the following property: all solutions to the Cauchy problem ẋ(t) ∈ F(x(t)), x(0) = 0, are also solutions to ẋ(t) ∈ extF (x(t)). We prove that W is residual in C(...

The Bang-Bang theorem via Baire category. A Dual Approach

The paper develops a new approach to the classical bang-bang theorem in linear control theory, based on Baire category. Among all controls which steer the system from the origin to a given point x̄, we consider those which minimize an auxiliary linear functional φ. For all φ in a residual set, we show that the minimizing control is unique and takes values within a set of extreme points.

Generalized Baire Category and Differential Inclusions in Banach Spaces

where F is a Hausdorff continuous multifunction with closed, bounded values. In this paper we prove the local existence of a solution of (1.1 ), assuming that the convex closure of F(x,,) has finite codimension. More precisely, we assume the existence of a closed affine subspace E, G E with finite codimension, such that the interior of E. n E6 F(x,) relative to E,, is nonempty. Two special case...

Resource-Bounded Baire Category: A Stronger Approach

This paper introduces a new deenition of resource-bounded Baire category in the style of Lutz. This deenition gives an almost-all/almost-none theory of various complexity classes. The meagerness/comeagerness of many more classes can be resolved in the new deenition than in previous deenitions. For example, almost no sets in EXP are EXP-complete, and NP is PF-meager unless NP = EXP. It is also s...

Bounded Solutions of Carathéodory Differential Inclusions: a Bound Sets Approach

We will always consider a Carathéodory set-valued map F : R×RN RN with nonempty, compact, and convex values. We recall that F is said to be a Carathéodory multifunction if F(·,x) is measurable for each x ∈ RN , and F(t,·) is upper semicontinuous for almost all (a.a.) t ∈ R. For the definitions of these standard notions, see, for example, [30]. Our main result is Theorem 4.2. It states the exist...
